3。5 stars… a quick read (at 445 pages) but nothing that was outstanding。

I enjoyed this, but I am so ready for Nate and Stevie to be together。 So tired of David。 Stevie deserves better。

A solid installment of the Truky Devious series。 It 2oukd be nice if Stevie matured a bit through the series instead of staying the same。

She done and made David revert back to fuckup David and left us on a cliffhanger! Would’ve been a 4。5-5 stars if it hadn’t been for the slow start, lack of Nate-isms and Janelle-isms and leaving us on a cliffhanger with fuckup David。 。。。more

I felt like this was incomplete and needed more thrill to the mystery。 With the books in the past, there was always some imminent danger but this was definitely more of a cozy mystery feel。

Hello Maureen Johnson, I love you。 It feels Agatha Christie-esque with the parallel crimes in the English countryside, but has Maureen Johnson's classic Easter eggs。 While detached from the Truly Devious trilogy, I love these one-offs with Stevie Bell。 There were so many little details that lead you to the final culprit, though I definitely missed all of them。 We're talking Knives Out levels of blink and miss it and I savored every minute of it。 I'm also convinced that each of these books should Hello Maureen Johnson, I love you。 It feels Agatha Christie-esque with the parallel crimes in the English countryside, but has Maureen Johnson's classic Easter eggs。 While detached from the Truly Devious trilogy, I love these one-offs with Stevie Bell。 There were so many little details that lead you to the final culprit, though I definitely missed all of them。 We're talking Knives Out levels of blink and miss it and I savored every minute of it。 I'm also convinced that each of these books should come with a murder board so you can track all of the clues you find。 If you haven't read any of these yet, I deeeefinitely recommend trying this one on for size! Maureen Johnson is back with another Truly Devious novel to finish out 2022 strong。This review contains spoilers, so please don't read further if you haven't read the book。For the fifth installment, we join Stevie and her friends (Nate, Janelle, and Vi) in London on a week-long "educational" trip, which is mostly so Stevie can visit her boyfriend, David。 While there, Stevie meets David's schoolmate, Izzy, and learns about an unsolved double murder in the nineties that Izzy's aunt, Angela, was co Maureen Johnson is back with another Truly Devious novel to finish out 2022 strong。This review contains spoilers, so please don't read further if you haven't read the book。For the fifth installment, we join Stevie and her friends (Nate, Janelle, and Vi) in London on a week-long "educational" trip, which is mostly so Stevie can visit her boyfriend, David。 While there, Stevie meets David's schoolmate, Izzy, and learns about an unsolved double murder in the nineties that Izzy's aunt, Angela, was connected to。 Izzy convinces the gang to go along with her to Angela's house to ask about the murders。 After a tense conversation, the gang leaves and later learns that Angela has disappeared。 Stevie, being Stevie, becomes obsessed with finding Angela and solving both cases。This entry into the Stevie Bell world is a little different than the previous ones, primarily because it focuses more on the interpersonal relationships between the characters than the mystery itself。 There are some readers who will find this off-putting but I thought it was a necessary turn in the saga of Stevie and her friends。 They are teenagers about to graduate and go off to college。 It makes sense for them to struggle with personal relationships, worries about college acceptance, and fear of leaving their friends behind。The mystery itself is a solid whodunnit with lots of clues sprinkled throughout the book。 Johnson is a master at giving her readers just enough to keep them interested without letting them solve the mystery too quickly。 The interpersonal plots were poignant and touching。 Johnson continues to be excellent at describing the fear that comes with having a panic disorder as well as the awkwardness of being a teen still figuring out how you fit into the world。Overall, I definitely recommend this book, especially if you're a fan of the series for the characters over the mystery。 I can't wait to see what Stevie does next。 。。。more

Hm, that was a bit of a let down。 I really like the series, it is fun and a quirky YA-mystery。 And I still enjoyed the mystery part of this one。 But the main characters were so off。 The side characters (Nate, Vi, Janelle and David) did not need to be in this story。 And when they were there, they were annoying。 And Stevie herself was so most annoying。 She is brilliant and anxiety ridden, but this time here self doubts were just to much and to unbelievable。 They did not come across as cute, but as Hm, that was a bit of a let down。 I really like the series, it is fun and a quirky YA-mystery。 And I still enjoyed the mystery part of this one。 But the main characters were so off。 The side characters (Nate, Vi, Janelle and David) did not need to be in this story。 And when they were there, they were annoying。 And Stevie herself was so most annoying。 She is brilliant and anxiety ridden, but this time here self doubts were just to much and to unbelievable。 They did not come across as cute, but as weird。 So, hm, I don't know if it would not have been a good time to finish the series on a high one or two books ago。 This one just does not have the same steam。 And why does the setting have to be in England。。。 。。。more

I was incredibly excited to see another continuation of the Truly Devious/Stevie Bell series, I loved the first three and the fourth was a good follow-up, but this one was missing something。 The mystery, maybe? It was slow。 And the mystery part wasn't as interesting or mysterious (?) as the Truly Devious storyline。Stevie and her crew felt like connecting with old friends。 Stevie was a mess, which I actually kind of liked, because she's 17, and even though she'd solved actual murders in the past I was incredibly excited to see another continuation of the Truly Devious/Stevie Bell series, I loved the first three and the fourth was a good follow-up, but this one was missing something。 The mystery, maybe? This was a fast paced mystery and since I love cold cases。。 This one topped for me in YA mystery genre。 Out of the other YA mystery books that I've read, this one is with the best plot it did get slightly--just slightly boring in the middle of the book and the begining but then it caught it's constant pace and was perfect。 There were some minute details like , how David refers to stevie as "princess", no teenager would every do that。。。 (I wouldn't,since I am one or was one when this was publishe This was a fast paced mystery and since I love cold cases。。 This one topped for me in YA mystery genre。 Out of the other YA mystery books that I've read, this one is with the best plot it did get slightly--just slightly boring in the middle of the book and the begining but then it caught it's constant pace and was perfect。 There were some minute details like , how David refers to stevie as "princess", no teenager would every do that。。。 (I wouldn't,since I am one or was one when this was published) And somehow their friendship just seemed off in this book。, like the author tried to build up 'the nine' and just gave up on our main characters。 It gave DT's The Secret history vibes and I was all in for it。 At the end of the book we are quite startled by the killer and I just lovvedd how MJ connected the 2 murders。 When the book end we see that the dynamic (or what will become of their relationship)between Stevie and David is sort of left on the cliffhanger。 No that i even shipped them, tbh。 But alll in all i really like how unpredictability good and engaging the plot was。。 Finished it in a day while studying for my exams for the next day。 This is my wrap up for the year 2022! Happy New year 2023! Fiona, xoxo 。。。more

i am a huge fan of this series- i recommend it to everyone i know。 it has everything i want: excellent mystery, great setting, and the BEST supporting characters (excluding david because i hate him)。 this book almost lived up to the expectations of the other four but it missed the mark on a few points。 i felt like it focused too much on stevie’s internal struggle too much and so we lost on the mystery and her relationship with her friends。 i spent several of my formative years in London, and it i am a huge fan of this series- i recommend it to everyone i know。 it has everything i want: excellent mystery, great setting, and the BEST supporting characters (excluding david because i hate him)。 this book almost lived up to the expectations of the other four but it missed the mark on a few points。 i felt like it focused too much on stevie’s internal struggle too much and so we lost on the mystery and her relationship with her friends。 i spent several of my formative years in London, and it made me really happy to see the gang™️ spending time in the places i remember so fondly。 overall, a great addition but compared to the other 4 books which i rated 5 stars in a heartbeat this one was a bit of a miss。 nevertheless i will be waiting anxiously for book #6! 。。。more

When it clicks, it clicks; that’s how it works for Stevie Bell and that’s what works in these novels! And then have the audacity to say you messed up big time by dumping her, only to then be found making out with another girl not even 5 minutes after saying that。 Eat rocks David。 。。。more
